The Ten Commandments - Blessed Are They!

The Bible Says:

"Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end."

Matthew 28:20

Old Testament - Ten Commandments
New Testament - Sermon on the Mount

Commands and Blessings

God has given us His laws, The Ten Commandments, to help us in our Christian walk. The plans He has for us are to bless us. On the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches the blessings that come when we do what God tells us to do, but we must do them for the right reasons. Actions and works will not bring salvation. God is far more concerned with the condition of our hearts than our actions. First we must receive Jesus as our Savior and Lord. His Holy Spirit comes to live in us. Then we can enjoy the blessings of doing what God commands. We do what is right because our hearts are turned to Him. We can overcome sin because He gave us that victory in Jesus Christ.

This study teaches the Ten Commandments together with the "Blessed are they" statements Jesus made on His sermon on the Mount. We need to reinforce our need to obey the Ten Commandments. They are there for our protection. But no as a basis for our salvation. Teaching what makes us blessed seems to go hand and hand with the Laws. I pray you will be creative in your teaching!

From the 5th Chapter of Deuteronomy

The first three speak of our relationship to God!
1. Do not put any other God's in place of me.
2. Do not make statues of gods...and do not worship them...I am a jealous God....
3. Do not misuse the name of the Lord you God.

The 4th and 5th speak 'to do' commands about our personal needs.
4 .Observe the Sabbath day. Keep it holy...in honor of the Lord your God.
5. Honor your father and mother...and things will go well with you.

The last 5 are the 'not to do' commands in our relationships with others.

6. Do not commit murder.
7. Do not commit adultery.
8. Do not steal.
9. Do not give false witness against your neighbor.
10. Do not long for your neighbor's wife...(or) anything that belongs to your neighbor.

If you take the first list to heart and do them as God has commanded, Jesus tells us what will come from our obedience. First He tells us All of these commandments are included in these two:

Matt. 22:36-40 "Jesus replied, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind.' This is the first and most important commandment. And the second is like it. 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' Everything that is written in the Law and the Prophets is based on these two commandments."

Sermon on the Mount - the Beatitudes - Blessed is He!

From the 5th Chapter of Matthew

Blessed are those who are spiritually needy.
Blessed are those who are sad.
Blessed are those who are free of pride.
Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for what is right.
Blessed are those whose hearts are pure.
Blessed are those who show mercy.
Blessed are the peacemakers.
Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right.
Blessed are you when people make fun of you and hurt you because of me....

"Then the King will speak to those on his right. He will say, 'My father has blessed you. Come and take what is yours. It is the kingdom prepared for you since the world was created."Matthew 25:34

"I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'" Matthew 23:39

People sometimes do not see all the 'if', 'but' and 'however' statements in the Word of God. We have blessings for our obedience and we have consequences for our disobedience. God loves us and is the same Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow!

I have found it very difficult to teach the 'Ten Commandments' and even the 'Blessed Are They' lessons without giving an appearance of legalistic attitudes. I assure you that my heart is not connected to a works mentality. Children need to learn right actions. God gave us His boundaries book for our good. Right attitudes and actions come when we become totally devoted unto Him, in full agreement with His Word!

Please emphasize the relationship God desires to have with us to the children as you go through this study. He wants us to love Him as unconditionally as He loves us!
