"IN FAITH, HE..." Devotional from Cherbear

Work Ethics

Chores! Not a word we often group together with "cherish." Maybe it should be! When we think of all we are capable of doing and how little we actually accomplish we should be asking ourselves, "what is my work ethic?" We can cherish our God given abilities and put them to good use in His Kingdom oriented chores.
"The LORD looks out over the whole earth. He gives strength to those who commit their lives completely to him." 2Chronicles 16:9a
God is looking for people who will live to honor Him. He is seeking minds desiring to study His Word, bodies willing to do His work, and hearts that seek to serve only Him. He searches the whole earth looking to give His strength to those who would revolve their lives around Jesus and the purposes of His Kingdom. When we look at a job and it seems impossible, we must remember, "...all things are possible with God." Mark 10:27 If we learn to watch and see where God is working and then join Him with prayerful, Godly ambitions, the enabling will follow.
"Work at everything you do with all our heart. Work as if you were working for the Lord, not for human masters." Colossians 3:23
This verse reminds us that no matter what we are working at, it is important to God that we do it well. It is most important that we reach to Him for the enabling to go beyond our own capabilities. Whether our work is in our church or involves work in our personal lives, God would have us work at everything as if we were doing it for Him. He can use the evidence of His strength in our weakness to bring others to His loving grace.
"Do everything you can to live a quiet life. Mind your own business. Work with your hands, just as we told you to." 1Thessalonians 4:11
This "Do as you're told," statement applies to what we hear and know from God's instructions. God does not want us to be boastful of what we have done, desiring attention or rewards. When we do good deeds for personal gain, we are doing them for the wrong reason. God knows our thoughts, heart's intent, and even the motives involved in all that we do. He is the One Who will reward us in due time and the reward will be consistent with what He reveals to us in His Word. A good work ethic is to do all you are asked to do, and then some; Go the extra mile for the sake of others. In the Bible, we can look at Rebekah, Isaac's wife, to learn what God would have us know about work ethics. You can read about the life principles that came so natural to Rebekah in Genesis 24:1-27. Pay close attention to verses 12 through 20.
May the Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father comfort your hearts. May they make you strong in every good thing you do and say. 2 Thessalonians 2:17
Above, I asked, "How can we group the words chores and cherish together?" First, we can ask God to give us a life's work that is God honoring and helpful in His Kingdom. This indeed will be a chore worth cherishing. Second, we can learn to be faithful in the execution of the chores we are given. We may find ourselves in a battle with Satan to accomplish what God has in His plan for us. IN FAITH, HE... will direct us in the way we should go and bring about victory according to His will. We can put Him above all else and cherish the grace we are given to complete the task!
